My commitment to providing the best service

Earlier this year I completed two courses as part of my commitment to provide the best service to my clients. Learning and keeping up with the most up-to-date, humane, evidence-based knowledge and training techniques enables me to support my clients and their pups with lasting behavior change. In addition to taking formal courses, I love reading, listening to podcasts on animal behavior and training, and seek out opportunities to learn from other pet professionals by shadowing and assisting when I can.

I’m onboarding as a volunteer at Joybound People & Pets, a nonprofit shelter and rescue organization that has innovative programs for pets and their families including a public training facility, spay & neuter clinic, community outreach and events, pet boutique and thrift shop, and affordable grooming salon. A requirement to volunteer there is to complete the Fear Free Shelters Course to learn how to work with shelter animals in a low-stress, fear-free manner. While the course was mostly a review, I did learn a few new things that are applicable to my work with animals in the shelter as well in my client’s care! Fear Free offers a variety of courses online for people who live and work with animals including pet owners.

I also completed an intensive 8-week seminar (5 hours of class time and course work per week!), Living and Learning with Animals, with Dr. Susan Friedman. The seminar had participants from all over the world who are pet parents, animal caretakers, veterinarians, and training professionals all interested in learning how to better understand and work with animals. I passed the “mini-PhD course in animal behavior” with a written exam in mid-March. Learning under Dr. Friedman was such a treat; she beautifully models mindful communication with animal and human clients alike.
